Lo-Ball Overdrive

The Lo-Ball Overdrive is a reproduction of the rare Frantone Hi-Ball.

Not much is out there on this one. Fran’s main focus with the Hi-Ball was clearly to make an overdrive with different clipping options that would have little to no volume change when switching between them. She succeeded in this, but with the diodes in the gain loop of the op-amp, there is a pretty significant pop when switching between them. Not a big issue since players are not apt to switching their clipping while performing.

All in all, a great sounding drive. The TLC2262 rail to rail op-amps really provide punch that cuts through. The clipping options are all very different and each sounds great.

Germanium - I used NOS ITT 1N34As here. More compression, very smooth.

Silicon - NOS 1N4148s here, not as much compression as the Germanium, and more bite.

LED - Most would expect these to be the most aggressive, but they are the least, since they clip less than the others. Red Siemens Argus used here. Excellent crunchiness.
